This Week in PR Ethics (2/16/23): Deepfake Porn, Bullying, and Workplace Romances

It’s Valentine’s Week – is there a better time to share articles on the rise and weaponization of deepfake porn, the ethics of workplace romances and the rise of abusive workplaces? Read on!

  • Deepfake Porn – This article on the Pulse Substack really drives home how prevalent Deepfake porn is and how it is being weaponized. What was chilling was the attacks against those that speak out against it.

  • Bullying on the rise – Ethisphere released its 2023 Workplace Culture Report. A key finding is while harassment, discrimination and retaliation decreased – bullying increased. It also found Gen Z is the least likely to speak up. This means organizations need to be more proactive in encouraging younger staff that if they see something, say something.

  • The Ethics of Workplace Romances – I found this article from SHRM on the ethics of workplace romances to be particularly appropriate, since it is Valentine’s Day this week. It also found that there is a benefit to being in the “friend zone” – as it aids retention.

  • Greenwashing: Do What You Say – Greenwashing is still on the rise. But now it has the attention of the SEC, which is investigating financial services firms to make sure if they say they are offering ESG funds, they really are.
